What TYPES of Writing classes do you offer?

I offer 1-day intensives and "business of writing" workshops for fiction and nonfiction (beginner to advanced) writers. I also offer 6-week writing series in fiction and nonfiction. There is no set annual schedule for these...I teach them when I feel like them. These classes take place in Asheville, North Carolina or other cities.

What is your teaching style?

I'm definitely not a Lish-type professor, but I'll give you realistic, accurate and detailed feedback on your work. I come from a "generative" school model, where the more you create, the more you have to work with, which is how you find the gems. But the act of self-editing and revision is tough. Publishing, pitching, working with editors requires a thick skin. I will help you build that tough part of yourself.

Are these Peer-to-Peer Workshops?

No. My 6-week writing series are not peer to peer workshops...what this means is that the class is not dependent on, nor directed by, critiques by students at your same writing level. I don't think that's very helpful. However, it's important to learn and practice being a critical reader and expressing constructive criticism and thoughts on a work of art. So, you will hear a few thoughts from students on your work/others' work/assigned readings at the beginning of each workshop before we dive in to deep manuscript feedback from me, a craft lecture and discussion, and writing time. Each class series is designed to give you feedback on your progress as well as provoke your imagination and propel you forward to generate new creative work.

Are you a creativity coach?

No. You will not receive creativity coaching, life coaching, blogging 101 courses, empowerment coaching, or ANYONE CAN DO IT fluffy messages when working with me. Plenty of stuff like that exists on the Internet. I don't believe that everyone can be a great writer, but I do believe that a great writer can come from anywhere.

I can't afford to take a class. Do you offer trade or sliding scale?

I don't offer trade or sliding scale, but I do offer one full scholarship per workshop or series. Details and applications are here.

What is Your Refund Policy?

One-Time Workshops: I price my classes as affordably as possible.  You can cancel your registration up to 24 hours in advance of the workshop for a refund. Refunds after a workshop are offered on a case-by-case basis.

Creative Writing Series: After you have completed one class in a writing series, there are no refunds. But I am dedicated to your progress and success. I know life, situations, stuff come up. If you need to withdraw, let me know. We'll work it out.
