The Unerring Taste

May 27, 2014 Catherine
Stein and Alice B. Toklas in Paris

This month, my Arcadia column, Yours Truly: Craft Lessons from Letters, takes a slight turn from famous authors to focus on the correspondence of Alice B. Toklas, and what we can learn from her food writing. One of the great things about writing this column is how much I learn about the inner lives of writers' partners, too.

Before work: coffee, washing clothes, curing the last 10lbs of bacon.
Building something special, to be released in 2019. Will announce soon.
Using the garden flower harvest: Steeping one batch of calendula/grapeseed oil and one batch of calendula/lavender/sweet almond oil for waning to waxing moon to make some soothing lip balm sticks and topical oil for my friends who have dry skin in the winter. I don’t steep the whole cut flower heads because the petals and buds strained from this oil will be repurposed for a batch of lavender salt bath scrubs and will look oh so pretty. Calendula and lavender are soothing, anti-inflammatory, and promote healing. Calendula is very easy to seedsave, too. A lot of folks find the oils can be expensive or out of budget, which I understand, so I recommend looking online now at good herbal sources for steep discounts during the Black Friday weekend, in bulk at your local shops, or try a “discount” grocery store (we have a couple in Asheville that I love and I hit the jackpot there!)...just look at the expiration dates and smell it first before buying to make sure the oil hasn’t accidentally turned rancid. 🙌🏼 // #urbanhomestead #herbalmedicine #herbalskincare #diy #makeyourown #calendula #lavender #healingskin #winterremedies #herbalremedies #naturalsolutions
Sometimes you just need to build a fire and sometimes that’s all you can do.
